Artisans

If you fancy competitive golf on a super course - and a friendly glass with a great bunch of people - come and join Old Fold Artisans…

Artisan golf was created in the 19th century to give working men the chance to play on good courses affordably. The first Artisan club was founded at the North Devon GC in 1888, under the auspices of the legendary J.H.Taylor, the 5-times Open Champion. He had once been a greenkeeper, and he promoted Artisan golf because he believed that:

“Everyone, regardless of financial standing, should have access to the game of golf”

Gradually, Artisan golf spread throughout the country - usually as a form of associate membership in existing golf clubs.

Typically, Artisans paid a low fee in return for helping to maintain the parent club’s course. This was the case at Old Fold, and it still is. Our Artisan Club was formed in 1946. The club gives us reserved weekday and weekend playing times, and we provide monthly work parties to assist the greens staff.

We play social golf on Tuesday and Friday evenings, and Medal and Stableford competitions at the weekends. We also play club and county knockout competitions and matches against other Artisan clubs throughout the season. We have an extremely hospitable ‘19th hole’, as well.

Will you fit in? Well, our membership covers all walks of life, from tradespeople to office staff, and everything in between. So, if you enjoy a game of golf and like to socialise with easy-going people, we're sure you'll feel at home.

If you currently play in a society or have the odd round with friends, but you’d like to find out about playing more often, in a club environment, contact our Hon.Sec., Rick Randall: 07769 049900 or email him at: [email protected]

We’d love to hear from you.
